Baseball is a good thing for children if they get proper help and guidance from an early age. It is a commonly known fact that children get better in any sport they learn if they start at young age and they show even bigger and faster improvement if the also enjoy that sport.

In the case of baseball the basic things to start with are batting and catching the ball. This doesn’t mean that pitching or defense skills aren’t important but you should first concentrate on the basic things. Batting is important no matter the player because it is one skill you must master if you want to become a good player. Here a few things about batting you might want to give more attention to:

* Pay good attention to mastering the basic techniques of batting. The first thing about batting is having a good grip on the bat. One of the techniques most players use during baseball games is that of holding the bat with both of your hand’ knuckles in a lined up position as opposed to holding it tightly with both palms which doesn’t give you the best control over the bat.

* In addition to mastering batting techniques you must also work on your stance. You won’t be able to hit the ball correctly if you don’t work on your stance to get the proper balance. You can do this by keeping your knees slightly bent and also keep your waist bent slightly forward and rested on the balls of your feet.

* Swing is also a very important part of batting the ball properly so you might want to learn how to control your swing and the transfer of weight. Transferring your weight is proper when it is done from the balls of your feet on to the front foot. Your hands are also important because the best way to make sure you hit the ball is to limit your hand moves to a minimum and also keep them within the flight direction of the ball.

Beside all these techniques you could also achieve great result if you keep a positive attitude. Concentrating on the ball and leaving all distractions aside can very much increase the chances of a hit. You also should take your time and avoid hitting in a hurry.

The best help you can get if you want to begin learning to play baseball is from an experienced player who can help you make corrections in your moves and help you with the best advice you need to improve your game. To make improvement possible you could also practice your batting with hitting drills. All you need to do now is to get out there and play.

Baseball – The American Sport

Baseball has been around for quite some time now. It was initially practiced just for fun. The history of baseball began in the early 1700′s but the first actual baseball games were recorded in 1800′s. Baseball still needed some more time before it became a professional sport because in those early times baseball was a much too informal game. Baseball had then become a profession but even so it was only recognized in New York.

The spreading of baseball outside of New York’s boundaries only happened after the end of the civil war. Even after baseball had spread throughout the entire country there were still problems because many African American’s who wanted to play it were forbidden to do so.

This would chance once the National Association of Baseball Players was formed but not for a long time. After African American’s were allowed to play this sport they were banned again after a few years by the same Association that helped them in the first place.

This didn’t make African American’s back down so they got mobilized and formed their own teams which were referred to as the “Negro League” or all black teams. Because of the racism they were facing many very talented African American players couldn’t move on to the National League for many years to come.

In those times baseball was still not a very organized game and in many cases baseball teams had to play by different regulations depending on the place they were playing. Baseball as it is played today had undergone many changes throughout history. One example is the rule that allowed players to hit the ball anywhere and run for the bases which is no longer valid and was replaced with the rules of “fair ball” and “foul ball”. Changes were only made until 1845 when the final set of rules was approved and it is still being used today.

Another important moment in baseball history was the appearance of the first professional baseball team in the late 1860′s which was known as the Cincinnati Red Stockings. This moment was followed by other teams and this lead to the forming of the Major Leagues.

One very interesting thing about baseball is the tradition tight to first game of the season which is that it is always the President of the United States the one who throws the first pitch of the season and the one who opens it. This tradition is quite old now since it first started after the appearance of the first major leagues. Among presidents who opened the baseball seasons one of the most memorable was President Harry Truman who was able to throw the baseball with both left and right hands.

The fame of baseball was continuously growing and nowadays it became a quite sophisticated and gigantic spectacle. Another interesting thing about baseball is that many baseball players have become very famous even if they had no notable results in this sport. Lots of books have been written and many movies made about big players like Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig or Hank Aaron who was proven to be the one who in fact broke Babe Ruth’s record.

Baseball’s evolution was possible also with the help of African American’s who had very good results in their games. Now everyone can enjoy the fun of baseball and recognize all the merit that goes to all the teams and players that contributed to the spread of baseball.

The Origins of Baseball

The history of baseball can be traced back to a French manuscript that dated 1344. The French manuscript has a picture that shows clerics playing a bat and ball game that is very similar to baseball.

Many people claim that modern baseball evolved from an old game called rounders. David Block once wrote a book about the origins of baseball. In the book, David Block inform the readers that baseball is originated from England. David says that the rounders used in the early baseball have some differences between different regions. According to David, the stoolball is the first antecedent to the baseball. Many people also suggest that crickets are derived from stoolball. Despite that, the most current findings have suggested that the baseball was introduced to England from Flanders, Belgium.

As baseball evolved, many clubs are established in urban area. Later, Alexander Cartwright form a list of rules which must be abide by the players. Most of the rules formed by Alexander Cartwright are still used in today’s baseball game.  After a year Alexander formulated the codes, the first baseball game take place in Hoboken, New Jersey. In the game, Alexander’s team was defeated by the New York Baseball Club. In 1857, the amateur teams gather together to evaluate the baseball codes and sent delegates to start the first baseball league called National Association of Baseball Players.

In 1860, there happened to be civil war in the United States. Through the effort of the Union soldiers, the game was spread to other countries where people never know baseball. The annual convention which took place in 1868 send delegates from more than one hundred clubs. When the numbers of members grew, the expenses also increased. In order to cover the expenses, the team must win most of the game. Though the members in the league are amateurs, they are paid. The Cincinnati Red Stockings wants to transform their amateur organization into a professional organization. Harry and George Wright assemble good players throughout United States. The baseball league successfully won 65 games. Eventually, the amateur players are no longer exists because the good players are now professionals.

Since  the earliest days of the sport the game has evolved greatly with the of the first national rule book  in the 1845 and then more recently the harmonizing of the details of the ground sizes / equipment including the introduction of  louisville slugger baseball bats as the official bat for all Major League Baseball Teams.

Along with American Football and Basket Ball the game of Baseball has continued to flourish as a sport in The United States and most boys still today dream of playing professionally… Long may it continue….

The Origins of College Baseball

A spot in a college baseball teams is what most students try out for in specially created recruiting sessions. Baseball has become one of the most popular sports in the United States and even more popular among young people is college and high school baseball. By playing baseball for their home teams they hope to gain experience and even a get a chance to be recruited by a Major League team.

Baseball doesn’t have a clear history so the origins are quite hard to trace. A sport with similar characteristics and rules has been played for some years in England and consisted of having a ball thrown at a target and the player on the other team trying to hit the ball before it hits the target.

In case the player of the other team had hit the ball he was allowed to score points by running through some checkpoints on the field while the players of the opposing team would try to recover the ball as fast as possible and put the running player out of the game. The rules of those early folk games were quite simple but were never written down.

The first recorded set of baseball rules to be published in a guide date back to the year 1845. These rules were specially published for one of the first baseball clubs based in New York called the Knickerbockers. The person responsible for this set of rules was Alexander Joy Cartwright who is still being referred to as the father of baseball.

In June 3, 1953, Cartwright was officially credited by the congress for inventing baseball as we know it. He was also given a special place in the Baseball Hall of Fame and he is still honored for his contribution to this sport. Some people have argued and still argue about Cartwright’s role in baseball history but most people recognize him as the one responsible for the successful introduction of baseball throughout all the major cities of the United States and also for all his work in promoting this game.

In order to succeed in college baseball all students should keep in mind that learning and mastering the basics of baseball is quite crucial. Being selected to play for a college baseball team is easier today because most coaches use the internet to find out about any talented and promising college baseball players.

There are also online communities where coaches meet and exchange key information about college baseball players and one of the most widely known is the D1Athletes. This is the best place for a young baseball player to gain attention on his skills and talent and the best place to be recruited online by a major team’s coach.

Some Guidelines for Buying the Best New Baseball Cleats or Shoes

Before you decide to purchase a pair of baseball cleats you might want to consider a few important things about baseball shoes. This article might be the best help for coaches, parents or baseball players to find out everything they have to know about how cleats are being made and how much influence do cleats have on the size and shape of their new baseball shoes.

Here is a list of baseball shoes related facts that will help you make the best choice:

* It is very important that you find out what regulations concerning cleats will you have to comply with during your future games. Depending on the league or association safety rules you might not be allowed to use metal cleats and in some cases you must choose the length of the cleats accordingly. The cleat length most commonly used are the ½ inch ones but in the case of junior leagues this length must be very carefully shortened to avoid any unwanted injury of the ankles.

* Some baseball cleats might not be made of metal but out of materials like plastic, rubber or other urethane based materials. These cleats will not last as long as the ones made of metal but they are cheaper in case you wonder about their advantages. Cleats made of rubber are mostly used and recommended for hard surfaces because they give better grip.

* There are also detachable baseball cleats with studs that can be replaced every time it is necessary. When it comes to this kind of cleats you should know that they last longer than normal but only if the studs are constantly checked for signs of wearing.

* Baseball cleats can have a combination of both metal and plastic cleats but you could also combine cleats of different lengths and shapes depending on the condition of the playing surface. Combination baseball cleats offer the best grip on slippery, muddy or other more difficult surfaces and beside grip you will also have better traction and control.

* Cleats smaller than ½ inch can be used to make sure your foot is properly snug in the shoe but this is usually the case of baseball players with bigger speed. It is the best way to avoid sliding or slipping of your feet inside the shoe whenever you need to start accelerating towards the next base.

* If you want to be sure that your foot is snug fit you first have to make sure your shoe laces are tight properly. This will have a great impact on the way you perform. Nowadays most players prefer Velcro over laces because they feel they give tighter “lace up”. Velcro is one option you might also want to try out for yourself.

Getting the best seats in a Major League Baseball Stadium

One of the most thrilling feelings you can get is probably the one of attending a baseball game and being there for your favorite team. American people have long history in enjoying baseball games. There is a huge difference between watching a baseball game on television and actually being there on the stadium. Only people who witnessed a baseball game in person know the feeling of cheering along with an entire stadium full of fans and the live sounds.

You might even have the chance to catch a foul ball and the thrill of it or even catch a home run. Your favorite team gets extra motivation from hearing your cheers along with other fans. If you choose to watch the game on television you become a passive part of the game as opposed to watching the game on the stadium which gives you thrill and excitement. You become an actual part of the baseball game and a part of the game as people who watch it at home see it in the television.

Just think about what you are missing in case that game becomes a legendary part of baseball history. You surely won’t be able to brag about simply watching it on the television. You surely missed a few great events you wished you could have witnessed in person.

If you are a baseball fan you clearly know some home run race victories, classic comebacks, milestones at bats or other important moments you wish you could have witnessed for yourself. There is just no way of comparing being there with watching it in your home. You could be part of the crowd and make others feel sorry for not doing so.

You should be thinking about watching a baseball game in person as to a great way to spend time with members of your family or close friends. Watching a baseball game from your home while sitting comfortable on your couch is just no match to being out in the stadium in nice weather and enjoying this with friends or family. Watching a baseball game in person is also a memory you will always have and you can easily build new friendships with other fans or you could strengthen your bond with your family.

The ritual of fathers taking their sons to a baseball game is a very old American tradition and will stay like this for many years and generations to come. You might want to think about this because your children might miss out on this tradition. They will have lots of fun and they will surely remember this for the rest of their life and pass this tradition to their children when the time comes.

Collecting Baseball Cards and Celebrity Memorabilia

You must agree that baseball fans have clearly become the most passionate and fanatic when it comes to collecting sports and celebrity memorabilia. There is only one sport that beat them at this and that is football. For baseball fans there is just no limit as to what or how many baseball related things they will collect. Most of the time they only collect things related to their favorite team but lots of fans go even further and collect almost anything.

Lots of baseball memorabilia collectors choose baseball cards over other collectible items and some of them can pride themselves with collections that value up to hundreds of thousand of dollars.

Protecting and saving the baseball cards in the collection is what all collectors start with and not just specific ones but all of them. They will not only collect the popular cards but also the ones of average players even if they are players of other teams. You just never know when an average player will grow in value thus giving his baseball card an even more high value. The value of a player’s card can surprisingly go up even if he made the news or was implicated in a scandal.

Before you even begin collecting baseball cards you might want to start by finding out all the different ways to protect these cards and keep your investment safe. You will probably be purchasing these baseball cards like other collectors in a “mint condition” meaning that these cards are spotless and have no folds or rips when they are purchased. All collectors know that in order to keep your baseball cards you need to place them in protective sleeves made of plastic.

Some collectors improvise and use different types of photo albums with plastic sleeves that match the size of the baseball card. This way the cards are not only safe but also very well organized. For this type of collectibles it is highly important to know that they should be protected from water, wind or any sudden changing temperature conditions.

You shouldn’t worry about finding baseball cards for your collection because this part is quite the easiest. You will be able to purchase them in almost any major department store, gas stations or sport memorabilia stores. Baseball cards are usually sold in packs containing up to 10 cards and you can also find them under different brands. Usually the best place to look for a great variety of baseball cards is a sports memorabilia store.

Collecting baseball cards might require lots of research to find out which brand is worth most. You can choose one brand and base your collection on that or you can go with 2,3 or even more brands at the same time. Most collectors will not suffice with only one brand and will collect baseball cards from more brands at a time.

Another option for baseball cards collectors is trading with other collectors in events specially organized by sporting memorabilia stores. This way you meet other collectors and you can easily exchange any copies you have with other cards you don’t have in your collection. This is another way of making your collection grow faster.

Baseball Swing and Hitting Slow Pitching

I was recently contacted by a baseball coach who had trouble with hitting slow pitching in his youth baseball team. The coach asked me for help in resolving this problem because it seemed like his lineup was having trouble building confidence and also had to deal with frustration. They were really having trouble with slower pitching and to make sure they overcome this problem I was called to make sure that the hitters undergo some special drills which will help them improve the way they hit slow pitching.

It took me some time to think about the options but here are the things that needed to be taken care of and the results:

1. Taking good care of their stance

It was clear for me that I needed to start by making them understand and identify the parts of slow pitching that affected their swing timing. The first thing they had to understand is that off balanced swings are the primary causes of slow pitching and then come up with a solution to help them improve their balance. Most coaches advise their hitters to “wait on the ball” but this doesn’t really work because hitters usually misunderstand this advice and wait on the ball when they are out in front of the pitch.

I provided them with the only good solution and that was to try hitting with a wider stance and eliminate stride. They young boys had to change their position to a wider one and 6 inches were enough to change their normal position to the proper one. The boys were now able to keep their weight more in the back and avoid moving it onto their front foot. Keeping your weight on the back leg is the best approach and hitting the baseball is much easier this way.

2. Pull Side and how to eliminate it

When it comes to slower pitching most baseball players think that crushing the oncoming ball is the best option. This is a wrong way to think about hitting so what I had to explain the young hitters was that they should eliminate the pull side. The pull side refers to the left field for righties and the right field for lefties.

This enabled the youngsters to avoid hitting the pitch too early and focus more on hitting the baseball to the opposite field. I feared they would think that every ball should be hit to the opposite field so I also had to explain that the important thing is not to focus on pull pitches solely.

It can be hard to explain patience to young baseball players but I got them to understand how the baseball swing mechanics and baseball swing work and how much they needed this to achieve victory. Paying attention to the way we hit slower pitching baseballs is one of the first things we need to do before thinking about winning a baseball game.

Baseball Conditioning for Youngsters

When it comes to youth baseball you might find lots of available conditioning techniques which enable the young players to maximize their flexibility, performance and range of motion. It is more than clear that a young player’s results are influenced by their physical limits and their body’s performance. All people implicated in a young player’s training must ensure that the maximum potential is ensured but only by using the recommended conditioning training.

Here are some advised recommendations on the best conditioning techniques which parents or coaches should use in the training of their young player:

* Helping the young player pitch better through swimming – There is no doubt that swimming is the best way to strengthen the shoulder muscles and ensure best throws for pitchers. Swimming can also prepare the body to avoid any serious injuries to the shoulder.

The best pitcher training should consist of 4 rounds of two minute free style swimming. Pitchers who can’t swim shouldn’t worry because they could easily push water away from his body in waist deep water but only under adult supervision. They should also do this for repetitive 2 minute rounds.

* Sprint your way up to success – This is one of the most popular and commonly used training programs. This means that baseball players will have to pay great attention to their endurance if they want to be able to preserve energy throughout the entire game. The best way to make sure this is ensured is by using wind sprints in the young player’s training.

Wind sprints give better results if they are performed by the entire team no matter if they are catchers, infielders, outfielders or pitchers but you can also make them run in separate categories. This is a way to make them bond with each other and give strength and unity to your team. Having the young players do a repetition of 60 yard sprints will surely be a good way to start but you can lengthen that distance once you are sure they can handle it.

* Ball squeezing – This is a quite simple conditioning technique and it can be used in the entire team’s training and you can do this anywhere you want. Squeezing balls is very useful for the wrists and their strength and usually a Spalding ball is what gives better results. This technique benefits any player on the field from pitchers who can increase the speed of their throws to the hitters who will be able to put much more force in their hitting. This can also be useful for the infielders who will surely throw faster and harder.

* Stretching before every game – This is a necessary part of the players conditioning training and it is being used to prevent any unwanted injuries. Baseball coaches should have enough experience to make sure they know as many exercises as possible and this is mainly because they should fit the age and physical condition of the young players.

There are many other baseball drills that can be used in combination with these conditioning techniques to make sure the best results from the training of young baseball players and also make sure it is done safely and correctly.
